Map-based Explorations of Foods, Drinks, and More Common across the Black Atlantic

This dynamic map is a living work which I’ll continue to build and grow as my knowledge grows. My goal is to eventually launch the Museum of Global Foodways and its companion atlas, showing all the ways we’re similar, in spite of our apparent and often publicized differences.

Thank you, Geneviève Wallen for encouraging me to begin with personal, self-led solutions.

Why a map?

  • It is a spatial representation of my current knowledge and research through conversations, reading, searches - online, through books, film, music, and more

  • It highlights gaps that direct my exploration and research, to learn more - does this information exist? Where might I find it?

Layers

  • It consists of several layers

  • Each layer represents a dish, drink, technique, that connects West African foodways with foodways of the Black Atlantic and beyond.

Icons

  • I’m experimenting with icons, using photos that are as close to the main subject as possible.

    • Right now, I use one icon to represent the category

    • In future, I would like to use the specific icon for the dish, if time and technology permit

  • To see all the layers, click the icon in the top left corner that sits before the map title “Coast to Coast,…”. Toggle on one or multiple layers.

    • I’ll continue not only to add new layers

    • but to update the existing layers with information

  • Click each icon in a particular location to find out more about it.
